Exploration of key literary and historical themes of the American South.

Long considered by many outsiders—and insiders—a benighted region, the American South exerts enormous social, cultural, and political influence within the United States. To help students better understand the South, this course will examine key themes in its history (including slavery, evolving race relations, evangelical religion, and conservative politics) through letters, diaries, works of history, and fictional accounts.
