Examination of the major social and cultural changes related to the civil rights movement—including its impact on other movements.
The dramatic changes wrought by the civil rights movement in the late twentieth century United States are in evidence throughout the nation—and were clearly demonstrated for the world to see in the election of Barack Obama as the nation’s president. This course will explore, often through personal stories, the ways the equal rights movement for African-Americans affected not only members of that group, but members of other social groups—including whites, women, Latinos, and others—as it changed American society. Readings are scheduled to include selections from Anne Moody’s _Coming of Age in Mississippi_, Sara Evans’s _Personal Politics_, and the writings of Cesar Chavez.
