The aim is to acquire knowledge of the development of poetry in the USA as well as to gain a deeper understanding of themes, style, and idiosyncrasies of the individual poets.

The lecture intends to introduce the greatest American poets from the beginnings to the end of the 20th century and to closely analyse some of their best and most representative poems. It will also provide background information on the poets' life, as well as on their historical and cultural context. A complete handout with poems and other informational details will be provided at the beginning of the semester.
