The aim is to acquire a deeper understanding of the American South, in particular in regard to the issue of slavery, but also concerning its "myths" and how they change through and after the Civil War.
The classic film and Margaret Mitchell's novel, on which it is based, will serve as the starting point for exploring the various 19th-century American isssues it raises and deals with: pre- and post-Civil-War America; the Civil War; the South as a region: myth and reality; gender roles; slavery; values and attitudes such as honor or non-conformism; etc.
