American Literature and Culture: The American Civil War: History, Memory, Imagination

Exploration of key questions of memory and interpretation of America’s bloodiest military conflict.

Amid the 150th anniversary of the U.S. Civil War, this seminar will use works of history, memoir, fiction, and film to explore questions about how Americans have interpreted that major war and moment of social transformation. Intended texts include selections from _Uncle Tom’s Cabin_, a Mark Twain short story, various pieces of "Lost Cause” literature, and _The Killer Angels_ (a 1970s novel about Gettysburg). Possible films include _Gone With the Wind_ (1939), _Glory!_ (1989), and _Ride With the Devil_ (1999).

Lectures, presentations, group discussions

Active class participation, term paper, presentation of papers.
