In this course we are going to examine the relationship between theatre and film as art forms dealing with representation.
The course will look at concrete examples of playscripts that have been turned into film. Samples will be biased towards a Canadian context. We will discuss the playscripts as to their theatrical/performative merits, and see what has happened to these merits in the adaptation to film. We will, of course, also include thematic analysis in our approach of both playscript and film.
The course will require students to read the assigned playscripts and watch the films in advance, and prepare assigned theoretical texts on the problem film/theatre. Each student will be required (either individually or with a fellow student – depending on the total number of students – to prepare a class presentation. There will also be a short essay assignment.
