The course deals with Greek and Latin historiography under the aspect of the description and the perception of besieged cities, their inhabitants and conquerors.

Ancient historiography often focuses on ancient cities. They mark important points in matters of political history. On the one Hand the description documented in Greek and Latin historiography mirrors examples of intensive siege, clever defence and conquest. On the other hand the texts present the perception of the importance of cities, their inhabitants and at least their conquerors. Collective reading and the analysis of prominent examples (e.g. Babylon, Tyre, Carthage) offers a survey on ancient historiography and its methods of description from the 5th c. BC to the 5th c. AD.
