603025 Social Science of Education and "Bildung"
winter semester 2013/2014 | Last update: 07.10.2013 | Place course on memo listThe participants should receive insight in the historical-systematic theory of ‘Bildung’ and education. They should identify and learn approaches of the theory of ‘Bildung’ and education.
The theory of 'Bildung' (a typically German term) has become less important in the debate concerning the knowledge based society and related objectives. The aim with the theory of ‘Bildung’ is to promote awareness and interest into the program of 'self-formation' and the development of the 'Bildungsbürgertum'. At first the ancient concept of ‘Bildung’ and the Enlightenment are reference points. The declared goal of Enlightment is liberty, maturity and the courage to make use of the own intellect as well as features of our modern self-image. This age follows the new humanity with Humboldt’s ‘Bildungs’ concept and further social historical ages like the pedagogical reform movement.
Thus, a discussion of the relevant points in the history of ‘Bildung’ and education gives an insight into theory and can provide important ideas for the present debate about the knowledge based society.
Lecture and discusison, group work (basic texts, group discussion).
A written examination in the last block.
