After attending this course, students know main theories and current empirical research in critical masculinity studies with special focus on education science. The course enables students to evaluate theoretical and empirical research in this field, identify gaps in current research and formulate possible new research projects.

This course focusses on critical masculinity research with particular reference to education science. Current discourses in the field of education are critically examined (e.g. the discourse on boys' supposed failure at school). Against this background, theories and empirical studies are discussed that understand educational institutions as gendered institutions, in which masculinities are formed and "produced". Finally, conclusions are drawn for emancipatory approaches to education and masculinities.
