Theoretical and Applied Literary Studies: The Interrelationship Between Text and Music

The course aims at describing and structuring the complex field of interrelationships between the arts by focusing on the interferences and interactions of text and music. It aims at the definition of basic concepts and terms and the presentation of theoretical models of classification. These terms, concepts, and models will be illustrated by analysing French, Spanish, and Italian literary texts.
The following issues will be dealt with:
- Intermediality – Interart Studies. Basic reflections on the interrelationships between text and music (St. P. Scher);
- Literature „in“ Music: program music;
- Music „in“ Literature: „word music“; structure parallels between text and music; „verbal music“; complex forms of the interrelationships between text, music, painting, and film;
- Mixed forms of text and music: discussion of the classifications proposed by U. Mathis-Moser, A. Oberhuber, R. Klenk-Lorenz; Chanson - Canzone – Canción; national anthems : form and function ; opera (libretto)
Presentation by the course instructor; analysis of examples (teamwork); compulsory reading at home as a preparation for the individual sessions;
Written exam at the end of the winter term
