Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

Students are expected to have acquired & demonstrated:

  1. Awareness & understanding of the rôle played by CLIL in the European setting and of sources available.
  2. General knowledge of CLIL developments in Austria & Europe in the context of European language policy
  3. Knowledge of practical methodologies and understanding of the concept of the 4 C's Curriculum & the CLIL Matrix and further CLIL models
  4. The competence to identify & evaluate appropriate materials and design appropriate materials & activities taking both general language methodologies as well as CLIL approaches & models into account.
  5. The competence to draw up a set of hypotheses for application
  6. The competence to reflect upon application models

Content
There are clear indications that learning content and language in an integrated
way will play an increasingly important rôle in the classrooms of the future.

This course aims to give an overview of the possibilities and state-of-the-art of teaching a subject through the medium of English.

The course will include an overview of CLIL practices, an introduction to established CLIL methodologies including reference to language acquisition theories, which are useful to CLIL. There will be opportunities to apply methodologies to materials from various subject areas, to devise model lesson plans and to reflect upon their effectiveness.

Method

Input by tutor, individual research on theme, group work during university sessions, interactive group presentations by students, individual written reflective documentation of term’s work.
