Based on the specific theme (“ritualized encounters”), the students should become familiar with the basics of "political communication" and "symbolic communication".
Theme of the course are "ritualized encounters" from the middle ages to modern times. Ritualized actions are of great importance in the pre-modern period. They refer to attitudes, values and political concepts. Based on sources and selected essays meetings of sovereigns or state visits, the meetings of Emperor and Pope as well as encounters with the subjects, the estates or members of the Parliament shall be treated. Which forms can be observed? What was the function of specific actions and signs. Which changes can be detected?
Combination of lecture and discussion based on selected texts and case studies.
Active participation. Written comment (10 pages) to the contents of the sessions.
