Graduates of this module are expected to understand and explain the content of the course, and to be able to apply the methods of the course. They should refine their knowledge on quantum optics, quantum information, and quantum many-body physics based on atomic systems.

quantum optics, quantum information, and quantum many-body physics based on atomic systems

Target group of the lecture: All PhD students who work on problems in quantum optics, quantum information, and quantum many-body physics based on atomic systems, or for students who want to refresh or deepen their know-how in atomic physics.

The lecture gives a compact but systematic introduction into the structure of hydrogen-like atoms. Starting from first principles we find how the central symmetry of the atom leads to separation of radial and angular motion and reveals the properties of quantized angular momentum.

Solving the Schrödinger equation for the radial motion we obtain the principal structure of the atom. At this point we can calculate the most important diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements between any two hydrogenic orbitals. As all other features of atomic structure in hydrogen-like atoms are described by perturbation theory we review time-independent perturbation theory in some detail. In the remaining part of the lectures we generalize angular momentum and discuss the physical origin of the most prominent perturbations of the principal atomic structure. This involves perturbations associated with electronic degrees of freedom (fine structure) or nuclear degrees of freedom (hyperfine structure) both in the absence or presence of static external fields.

The lecture will be held in two blocks. The first block is scheduled for

21-23 Oct.

The lecture is sponsored by IQOQI.
