Students should be able to test and link the empirical and theological approaches. On the understanding of GS, solid empirical experiences can be collected and systematised, with elements for a theological-heuristic framework for empirical research also being developed.

The interpretation of the Pastoral Constitution " Gaudium et Spes " is about the understanding of this Constitution and the application of this approach in the training process of the Diocese of Innsbruck to the Second Vatican Council.
After an introduction to the Constitution and to certain methods, we are going to visit selected, “council-days”, in the area of Innsbruck (during March and April). With the cooperation of Systematic and Practical Theology, we want to test the importance of qualitative social research theologically. Such an approach provides justification to the Pastoral Constitution, because it represents that document in the conciliar history, which was introduced by the social- sciences into theology. Amongst other things, it demands that the church should always explore the "signs of the times" to be in the "events, needs and desires", which are shared by the believers, with all people, to distinguish the true presence of God. The Council process of the Diocese of Innsbruck is geared to this task, without neglecting the established principles of the respective parishes and dedicated people.
In addition to a historical attention, for this distinction, and the seminar leader’s hypothesis, a “profounded anthropology" with an appropriate methodological sensitivity is required. In this context, we want to learn how to assess and to improve the different methods of social research, such as participant observation, interview and open conversation theological appropriately.
We begin with the assumption that with these methods and their attention to the individual biography, a greater awareness of a spiritual process in detail and in groups is possible.
Our seminar is supported by the Director of the Office for Pastoral Care, Mag.a E. Rathgeb, and she will be present at the last meeting.

Input via discussion, social science methods and from work within groups.

Development of themes and methods in groups, self admitting to the process and the oral and written presentation of the results.
