The seminar aims to deepen students’ understanding of the lecture topics, in particular through critical reading and discussion and independent analysis of case studies and empirical examples to be presented to the group. Thereby students gain a better understanding of theoretical, analytical concepts and learn to apply them in sociological analysis of current empirical phenomena.

The seminar focuses on the theme of identity and difference, and considers, in particular, the intersections between class, ‚race‘ and gender. The seminar deepens understanding of interactionist and ethnomethodologist perspectives on gender and their relevance to recent concepts of ‚doing gender‘ and ‘doing difference’. It covers the theoretical and empirical analysis of intersectionality. Further, it deals with processes of stigmatization and ‘othering’ and individual and collective responses through ‘passing’ or ‘identity politics’.

Inputs by students: presentation of case studies and independent sociological analysis of relevant examples. Discussion.
