Learning Outcome:

Knowledge of literature and its contexts of the early 20th century

Contents:

The omnipresent media interest in 2014, which marks the 100th anniversary of World War I, is an ideal starting point for dealing with German literature of the interwar period. This lecture, thus, offers an overview of this literature in its interrelation with the social, media and technical developments of the time (film, radio, mass culture, metropolis, new social milieus, etc.).

On the basis of works by Bertolt Brecht, Gottfried Benn, Ernst Toller, Erich Kästner, Thomas Mann, Alfred Döblin, Irmgard Keun, Erich Maria Remarque, Hermann Hesse, Franz Kafka, Franz Werfel, Joseph Roth, Ödön von Horvath, among others, we will illustrate the key literary developments and aesthetic tendencies of the time (including Expressionism, New Objectivity).
