The seminar aims at highlighting the main features in which varieties of English, and second-language varieties in particular, differ from the native varieties that formed their input. Among other things, the seminar will analyse the questionable concept of „colonial lag“, the phenomenon of „exaptation“, the idea of „founder effect“.

A review of pertinent concepts with exemplifications will be provided. Corpus study will complement the study of relevant references on individual features, especially in grammar and vocabulary.
