609159 Applied English Linguistics: Innovation and conservation in varieties of English
summer semester 2014 | Last update: 27.06.2017 | Place course on memo listThe seminar aims at highlighting the main features in which varieties of English, and second-language varieties in particular, differ from the native varieties that formed their input. Among other things, the seminar will analyse the questionable concept of „colonial lag“, the phenomenon of „exaptation“, the idea of „founder effect“.
A review of pertinent concepts with exemplifications will be provided. Corpus study will complement the study of relevant references on individual features, especially in grammar and vocabulary.

Students are required to attend regularly; presence at the first session, in particular, is mandatory. Other requirements for positive assessment are: language proficiency adequate to the 2nd Abschnitt level, active participation in discussions, regular reporting on research progress, a 20-min presentation (with handout) and a written research paper (stylesheet for linguistics available on Institute’s website.
