How to map feminist writing? What is a feminist literary archive? This course introduces students to key concepts, trends, and directions in the field of feminist writing from the publication of Aphra Behn’s short novel Oroonoko in 1688 to the recent work of 21st century authors such as Jeanette Winterson and Emma Donoghue.

Throughout the course, we will analyse a selection of feminist plays, poems, essays, short stories, and novels that were published in Britain and Ireland, primarily, between the late 17th century and today. We will look at how feminist writing, in its broadest sense, problematizes the categories of gender and sexuality, while simultaneously interrogating and rearticulating other axes of differentiation such as race, class, and age. Ultimately, this course encourages students to trace a range of feminist cartographies as a way to engage critically with written texts and begin to carve out their own position as feminist intellectuals.
