Introduction to „Gender in the contemporary author cinema (Almodóvar, Ozon, Özpetek)"

The concept of the author cinema is considered as a French invention and goes back to the trend of the Nouvelle Vague which has its beginnings in the 1950s. Directors such as François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard and Claude Chabrol are the main representatives of a new cinema which consider themselves as a European countermovement to the US mainstream cinema. Adapted from the theoretical writings of André Bazin (Qu’est-ce que le cinéma?) and the execution of the caméra-stylo from Alexandre Astruc, this group of young authors is forming, and they focus in their films on new aesthetical techniques (use of hand-held cameras, original screenplay, unknown actors and a lot of outdoor shots). They accompany their work with film-theoretical reflections which appear among others in the newly-founded journal Les Cahiers du cinéma. The Nouvelle Vague had a significant impact on the European film tradition and also in Hollywood; these film-aesthetical innovations did not pass without leaving a trace. Since the end of the 20th century, the new author cinema – well-known examples are Pedro Almodóvar (Spain), Francois Ozon (France) und Ferzan Özpetek (Italy) – got a renewed attention in the Romanic countries. These three directors will be covered by the seminar.

At the beginning we will work together on the basics of gender, Men’s and Queer Studies and you will be introduced to film theory and analysis. By the example of films from three of the most successful representatives of the modern author cinema, contemporary gender constructs will get in the focus: Which models of masculinity and femininity can be seen in the movies? How do they confirm, avoid, add or parody well-established images? Particular attention is also given to the star studies, since it’s often the stars – in contrast to the classical author cinema – to which the audience bounds via the character on the screen

Text readings, discussions, presentations, analyses of film clips

Please only inscribe  if you can participate at the workshop!!!

The bibliography and filmography will be provided on OLAT at the beginning of the semester.

Passed exam in Basic Cultural Studies!

The seminar takes place in the framework of a teaching cooperation with the university of Siegen, which begun in 2011. There, the same seminar will be offered at the same time. Therefore the first part of the seminar will take place at the beginning of the semester with one appointment every week, for each of the first five weeks. In this part the theoretical basics will be studied via relevant readings in the fields of film studies, gender and star studies. The second part, in which the students of the two universities will be brought together, will take place as a block seminar in Germany (25/5-29/5).  There, the films which were chosen together will be analysed and discussed. Please, enrol if you can definitively participate at the workshop!

Since the course is offered by the Romance studies department, students of Romance studies will be favoured in the enrolment, but of course other interested individuals are welcome as well!
