The course deals with the topic of the mad woman in French literature of the 20th and 21th century.

Students should be able to

(1) place the phenomenon of madness described in the novels in their social, historical and cultural context and retrace changes in the literary representation of madness

(2) analyze the narrative strategies employed for describing madness

(3) name possible 'symptoms' of a 'mad' corpus

 

After a short introduction given by the professor students will analyse the following novels

(1) Francois Mauriac, Thérèse Desqueyroux

(2) André Breton, Nadja

(3) Marie Cardinal, Les mots pour le dire

(4) Linda Lê, Lettre morte

Continuous assessment (based on regular written and/or oral contribution by participants).

Active Participation
All novels on the program have to be read
Mémoire de proséminaire (10-12 pages)
Final exam (eventually)
Exposé

At the beginning of the semester a bibliography will be distributed.
