interdisciplinary cultural approach to the First World War

2014 we will commemorate the beginning of World War I (1914-1918), which was denoted as the “primal catastrophe of the 20th century” by the American historian George F. Kennan (1979). At first a lot of artists and intellectuals welcomed it and saw it as a liberation of the decrepit society. But the first industrialized war harrowed the bourgeois world and destroyed the hope of progress of the 19th century. The war has affected significantly the global history which was steered in a new direction. The lecture focuses on its cultural history. Beyond an introduction into the central cultural historical aspects of World War I, guest speakers and a conference of the Brenner-Archiv on contemporary Serbian, Russian, English, German, but also American literature and rhetoric, will show the global dimension of the war.
