summer semester 2014 | Last update: 23.04.2015 | Place course on memo listapproach to contemporary Italian Cinema
Against all the pessimistic predictions, the ex-director of the Cineteca Nazionale Adriano Aprà proclaimed the nineties as the years of comeback of the Italian cinema. The same way it affected also other countries, also the Italian cinema had to cope with the big competition of the American cinema and the tv market. Nevertheless, the crisis of the eighties got surmounted, the number of viewers rose again and the market share of the national cinematographic (co)productions reached in the last years a rate of 30%, of course a fact which is very relevant confronting the European market. Also at an international level the Italian film had a comeback as we could see at the winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film: Cinema Paradiso from Giuseppe Tornatore, Mediterraneo from Gabriele Salvatores or Life Is Beautiful from Roberto Benigni. Particular emphasis of the seminar will be given to the single directors like for example Nanni Moretti and Edoardo Winspeare, to the cinema of migration, but also to the single cinematographic genres like the political satire or comedy.
In the first weeks of the class, the lections will be hold by the professor and will cover a first approach of the subject. The second part of the class will be performed by the students which will accentuate the tendencies of the contemporary cinema by means of presentations.
Active class participation, vision of all the films which will be discussed in class, presentation of about 30-40 minutes, paper of the subject presented in the presentation (about 20 pages) to hand in until September 15th.
The critical bibliography will be given at the beginning of the semester.
Only for students of the “2. Studienabschnitt” (a passed proseminar is expected!!)
