Students will receive a comprehensive introduction to gender linguistics and learn about the foundations of queer linguistics. In addition, students will acquire an understanding of gender and various conceptions of gender and of how gender and sex influence language. It is one of the objectives of this course to raise students' awareness of gender-neutral structures in language and a gender-equitable use of language. A confrontative comparison of Russian and German will help to highlight similarities and differences in language usage caused by the cultural context.

This class is an introduction to gender linguistics and provides information about this sub-discipline of linguistics from various perspectives. The following topics and research questions will be of particular relevance: introduction to gender studies (US-American, western European and Slavonic apporaches); foundations of gender and queer linguistics and their various approaches and categories; the relationship between society, gender, and language; the representation of society in and by language; gender categories and their social and linguistic perception; language as a means of discrimination; gender-mainstreaming in language usage; syntactical congruences in the context of gender; gender and discourse.

Presentation of topics and contents by teacher, discussions, moderated debates (course instructor and students), selected papers by students

end-of-term exam (oral + written)

A detailed reading list will be provided in the first session

The course language is Russian. Presentations / papers (Referate) can be given in German.

The reading list is central to the seminar and must be read and prepared at the beginning of the term / for every session.
