This lecture aims to illustrate the historical aspects of style, socio-historical and psychological aspects of hand drawing, referring to the compendia of Meder (1919) and Koschatzky (1977), as well as the interaction between the various functions of drawing and technical predispositions and possibilities considering the contemporary “Kunstwollen”. The history of paper production and collecting graphics and drawings will also be discussed, as well as the history of art-historical research methods such as X-ray fluorescence analysis. The main goal of this lecture will be to convey techniques of drawing and materials used throughout the epochs to the students.
