The aim of the course is the acquisition of a global understanding of scholarly and theoretical issues by readings and discussions of selected classical and/or innovative texts of historiography in class, acquaitance with trends in research and paradigm criticism.

In 1961, Hannah Arendt, a German-American philosopher, observed the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem. Eichmann had been the organizer of the “final solution” at the Berlin based Reich Main Security Office. But Arendt didn’t consider Eichmann a blood thirsty anti-Semite but rather a small-minded and zealous bureaucrat. Her report on the trial caused heated reactions. It also shaped and inspired the view of the Holocaust. Her thesis about the responsibility of Jewish leadership for Nazi crimes and of Nazi-perpetrators is still being discussed.

Reading, analysis, interpretation and discussion of the cited work completed by additional texts and films.

Course with continious performance assessment: attendance at all sessions, reading and presentation of texts, regular and active participation in discussions, short written assignments.

Hannah Arendt, Eichmann in Jerusalem. Ein Bericht von der Banalität des Bösen.  A report on the banality of evil - completed by an introductory essay and epilogue to the latest edition by Hans Mommsen, München-Zürich 2011 (1965).
