By the end of this course students should
- have learned about the theory of listening and speaking and be able to apply it to the practice of teaching these two skills.
- have gained practical ideas for conducting effective listening and speaking lessons.
- be able to select meaningful listening and speaking activities appropriate to the needs, interests and level of their learners.
- be able to offer activities to encourage learners of different abilities to participate in spoken interaction.
- be able to help their learners build vocabulary.
- know about language corpora and lexical approaches.
- show their learners various vocabulary learning strategies to enable them to become good vocabulary learners.
Introduction to the main principles behind listening and speaking and the importance of these two skills in the classroom, discussion of ways how to implement them, design of lesson plans based on teaching material used in Austrian schools.
In this course we are going to introduce the main principles behind listening and speaking and the importance of these two skills in the classroom.
-Discussion of ways how to implement the skills drawing on research in Applied Linguistics.
-Suggestions for helping our students develop their listening and speaking skills at all levels.
-Various ways of teaching vocabulary, e.g. ways of integrating vocabulary into a skills-based lesson; teaching vocabulary using a task-based model of instruction and ways of dealing with vocabulary errors;
Workshop mode including
- short lectures and discussions
- practical examples: toolkit, how to ...
- paired sharing, group and small group activities
- use of videos, internet sources to illustrate concepts
Classroom simulation or presentation: planning and holding a lesson / a series of lessons
Participation in class including reading and other assignments to prepare for the classes
Portfolio OR written exam
to be supplied within course
