Providing an overview concerning a socio-political and literary ancient phenomenon, its source evidence and the methods of critical analysis as well as of the setting in context

Writing about the phenomenon of the Doppelgaenger in 1925, Otto Rank based his study particularly on ancient literary texts. Doubles, Alter Egos and impostors adopting another identity play an obvious role in ancient literature of various cultures in different times. The lecture's aim is to analyze some case studies like Herodotus' false Smerdis, the rebel Andriscus labeled as "Pseudo-Philippus", the false Marius or the false Nerones in order to examine literary traditions and topoi, role-models as well as the political contexts and socio-historical elements.

Lecture providing informations, current results of research, critical analysis of the source evidence
