Acquirement of basic knowledge about cultural contacts in Asia Minor and the Near East in Medieval Times (4th-15th century) by means of selected topics.

The Byzantine Empire, successor and heir of the multicultural Roman Empire, was in permanent exchange with its neighbours: beginning with the Iranian Sasanides, followed by the Arabs starting from the mid 7th century, and finally with the Seljuk and Osman Empires in the East, and the forming European states. Constantinople can be regarded as one of the most outstanding cultural metropoles.

The lecture gives an overview of the multifaceted cultural contacts of Constantinople with its neighbours.

The basic knowledge is deepened by discussions on specific topics resulting from the presentations prepared by the students.
