knowing the myth of Aeneas and the most important texts where this myth is desribed

Aeneas played an important part in the construction of Roman identity. Starting with the reign of Augustus, there is a continuous range of literary descriptions of the myth. Crucial points in this chain of reception will be analyzed in their relationship to each other. It goes without saying that Virgil's Aeneid is an important text for this matter, but it will not be in the focus of this course, in oder to cast more light on other texts: Ovid, Livy, Origo gentis Romanae, Maffeo Vegio, Cristoforo Landino, etc.

The single topics will be introduced by presentations. Together we will translate the texts. In this part of the lecture, there will be a lot of possibilities for questions and discussions.

oral exam subsequent to the course
