600 years ago, the Council of Constance was opened. Together with the subsequent Council of Basel it is considered one of the great late medieval reform councils, convened in order to find answers to serious abuses. Most important was the restoration of church unity, since each of the three popes claimed the leadership of the church. When Duke Frederick IV of Austria helped Pope John XXIII to flee, King Sigmund declared imperial ban and imperial war, which led to the collapse of the powerful Habsburg position. Only after long-lasting conflicts the Tyrolean prince could consolidate his position and effect a compromise with the king.
Although the reform debate led to the adoption of some decrees, the condemnation and execution of Jan Hus as a heretic provoked far greater consequences - this theme should engage the church as well as the Holy Roman Empire for a long time. Overall, there were significant consequences which are to be discussed in the seminar.
