The complex phenomenon of the formation of a country or the territorialization of the Empire in the High and Late Middle Ages should be discussed with the example of Tyrol and in comparison with other regions.

Based ondifferent dominions in “Alttirol” in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages is shown, as by the compression of domination rights in the 12th and 13th century through the work of Count Meinhard II (+ 1295) a country is created and disengaged from existing ties to the duchy of Bavaria; parallels and differences to the development in other countries, mainly in today's Austria, will be worked out. In addition, those characteristics will be discussed, that make up a country according to medieval understanding. An overview of the territorial and constitutional development of Tyrol, in particular its relationship to the Habsburg state as a whole, finishes the course.

Lecture, assessment is based on a single examination at the end of the course.
