Sensitization for the subject of “Austrian History” and its difficulties; deepening of the knowledge in this field; acquisition of competences in dealing with visual sources and secondary literature as well as the general increase of visual skills; acquisition of the ability to present the newly-acquired knowledge in oral and written form.

‘A picture says more than a thousand words’, so says a well-known proverb, which refers to the assumption of both, a particular (or different) message and a particular emotional dimension of images in relation to texts. Given the fact that images are indeed meaningful and that that images enable a variety of approaches to the past, it is of great importance for historians to analyze them not only in view of their content – by historical critical interpretation - but also in view of their context – by investigating their use, function and meanings over time. This course addresses the historical analysis of pictures and photographs as well as their exploration as sources for Austrian History with a special focus on the period from the 18^th to the early 20^th centuries

Introduction; guest lecture; preparation and discussion of literature and sources; exercises; individual and group works; presentations. The course is assisted by OLAT.

Continuously assessed course including regular attendance; participation in the discussion; development of a topic using visual sources; oral presentation; written paper.
