Knowledge of the basics of historical source criticism; confidence in the use and interpretation of different types of historical sources

The critical interpretation of historical source material stands at the core of the historian’s work. And yet, the adequate handling of different types of historical sources only rarely finds a place in university curricula. In this course, we will work on a number of exemplary sources and submit them to thorough historical source criticism. The examples hail from the field of 19th-century communication history and touch issues such as telegraphy, wireless or contemporary forms of transport.

Self-study of source material; presentation and criticism of sources in the course by participants; group discussion

Attendance, active contribution, oral presentation of a source, short written exam
