Graduates are able to recognize statistical learning problems, to model and analyzed them mathematically, and to solve them numerically.

In this seminar we discuss concepts of statistical learning. There, a main task is the determination of a prediction Y = Y (X) from knowledge of the input X and some training data (observed values of input/output). Practical examples are the prediction of e-mail spam, pattern recognition, or object classification.

Regular contributions of the participants.

Continuous assessment based on regular written and/or oral contribution by participants.

In this seminar, we closely follow the book T. Hastie, R. Tibshirani, and J. Friedman (2009): "The Elements of Statistical Learning Data Mining, Inference, and Prediction", Second Edition. Online available at http://statweb.stanford.edu/~tibs/ElemStatLearn/
