Graduates will learn the practical implementation of the methods covered in the lecture. Focus lies on statistical tests, random variables and programatic analysis and visualisation of data.

Generation of random numbers, computer-assisted, parallel processing of data; deepening the knowledge of programming in ANSI C, handling and visualisation of data and statistical quantities; Automated data processing; deepening knowledge of Linux; creating low maintenance, portable, understandable programs in a scientific environment.

Continuous assessment (based on regular written and/or oral contribution by participants).

The course is "continuously assessed", meaning participation as well as presentation and work put into the exercises is evaluated. This gives no less than 60% of the final grade. Additionally there will be a written test and/or a final presentation.

The provided material should be sufficient. Any good introduction to statistics and statistical tests as well as a C reference might be usefull but not vital.

Knowledge of the Englisch language, Programming in C, basic usage of unix-type operating systems (incl. Bash-Shell), usage of plotting programs (ideal would be either Gnuplot, R or Phython Matplotlib), a ZID Linux account (apply at least 24 hours prior to the start at: http://orawww.uibk.ac.at/public_prod/owa/uvw$web$10.p001), patient usage of the OLAT e-learning system

In order to prepare solutions for the exercises at home, participants will either need a working Linux distribution (from a live CD, USB or in a virtual box) or a terminal emulator like PuTTY to login to the ZID machines via the internet (zid-gpl.uibk.ac.at).
