Students acquire knowledge in the description of material flows in manufacturing systems, service production and supply chains. They will learn state-of-the-art techniques for planning and control of the material flows. They will gain insights into descriptive models of material flows in manufacturing systems and supply chains that provide the theory for advanced planning and control concepts

Starting with a review of traditional operations management techniques, including inventory control and material requirements planning (MRP), we will proceed with examining the dynamic behaviour of manufacturing systems and the basic relationships between the performance measures. Continuing with working up the subtle influences of variability, we describe concepts for improving the performance of manufacturing systems especially with respect to flow time and inventory reduction (e.g., Just-in-Time, push/pull systems). The course will end with an overview of supply chain management.
