To deal with literary texts reflecting on the methodology and to develop a well-founded understanding of literary texts using meaningful examples

The word „novella“ (lat. novus – „new“) has a long and varied history in the European context. In literary history novella means a story of medium length, marked by definitions as „occurrence“, „concentration“ and „framework“. In the course we will discuss the most important theories reflecting the genre and learn about the history of the novella. Furthermore we will analyze selected texts from Goethe’s „Novelle“ (1828) to Martin Walser’s „Ein fliehendes Pferd“ (1978). The main focus will be on novellas of the realism (Gottfried Keller, Theodor Storm, Conrad Ferdinand Meyer, Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, Ferdinand von Saar).
