Knowledge about the nexus between language, the individual and the society; ability to reflect on the social implications of language and language use including varieties, language change and multilingualism.
Language is closely related to individuals, as well as to groups and to society in general, it plays a fundamental role for the identity of individuals and groups. Language acquisition and language loss, language policy, regional, social and individual varieties, special languages, multilingualism, perceptions, attitudes and norms are central topics of sociolinguistics.
The lecture focusses on central insights of sociolinguistic research as well as on concepts, research traditions and methods.
Lecture, assessment is based on a single examination at the end of the course.
