Students will be able to understand questions concerning the literary scene and to deal with issues regarding the mechanisms of literary distribution.

Processes of disseminating literature refer to a complex area of field of work and research, where the activities of publishers, booksellers, the editorial staff of literary magazines, archivists and others are analysed. The lecture will give an historical overview of the specific fields of work in the literary business and will discuss important theories of literary dissemination through different media, such as those by Niklas Luhmann and Pierre Bourdieu. In addition, some current questions regarding the dissemination of literature will be discussed. One of the central questions that will be addressed is how mediators of literature develop strategies to generate attention in today’s literary business.

Lecture with PowerPoint presentation; guest lectures (archivists, publishers, reviewers etc.).
