Knowledge about the ability to use different languages (external multilingualism) and different varieties (internal multilingualism); knowledge about diverse research methods in the fields of internal and external multilingualism; ability to analyse conversations and texts that make use of different varieties and languages (e.g. by code switching) according to the contexts, the attitudes towards multilingualism etc.

Internal and external multilingualism can be found in the same contexts, but they are treated differently and linguistic research follows different traditions. We will deal with the question, whether internal and external multilingualism can be examined with the same research methods and the same questions.

Perception, attitudes and the role of multilingualism for identity will be important cues.
