The students are supposed to interpret texts of German literature, taking into account (inter) cultural, theoretical, social and historical contexts.

During this lecture we will examine developments in German-language lyric poetry between 1900 and the present day and, using examples, analyses themes and techniques used in 20th lyric poetry (including, among others, works by G. Trakl, G. Benn, B. Brecht, I. Aichinger, I. Bachmann, P. Celan, the Wiener Gruppe, R.D. Brinkmann, E. Jandl, P. Huchel, S. Kirsch). Particular attention is devoted to nature-themed lyric poetry, political lyric poetry and poetological lyric poetry. Associated with this, the lecture also offers a reflection on theories of lyric poetry and a critical examination of methods used in the analysis of lyric poetry.

Prerequisite for Master's programme German studies: positive completion of elective module 2; for Teaching degree programme German: positive completion of 1st part of studies 'Neuere deutsche Literaturwissenschaft'.

Due to substantial differences in the allocation of ECTS-Credits in various curricula (teacher training programs/specialized degree programs), the requirements for this course vary. Information will be provided by the instructor at the beginning of the course. 

Recommended fpr the third semester Master's programme German studies and Teaching degree programme German.
