Improving the capability of analyzing literary texts, particularly in their historical context.

In recent literary publications we find a specific interest in presenting different aspects of the historical process (especially of the 20th century). This is often combined with a new reflection of memory. Discussing theoretical texts on memory, fact and fiction and novels of authors like Sabine Gruber, Maja Haderlap and Jenny Erpenbeck we will see that literary texts widen the historiographic point of view due to a special focus on topics, narration and language.

For master students: certificate for the optional module 2 in ‚Deutsche Philologie’. – Students in the diploma programme and in the secondary school teacher accreditation programme must have passed all examinations in German literature of the 1st part of German studies.

Due to substantial differences in the allocation of ECTS-Credits in various curricula (teacher training programs/specialized degree programs), the requirements for this course vary. Information will be provided by the instructor at the beginning of the course.

Prerequisite for Master's programme German studies: positive completion of elective module 2; for Teaching degree programme German: positive completion of 1st part of studies 'Neuere deutsche Literaturwissenschaft'.
