619003 Harmony
winter semester 2014/2015 | Last update: 02.07.2020 | Place course on memo listConsolidation of a knowledge of general music theory (scales/keys/intervals/rhythm/notation); the gaining of an understanding of principles of figured bass and four part harmonic construction and its relation to formal structure as well as the ability to recognise and describe these principles through analysis of music of the period.
Central to the course is a study of the principles of diatonic harmony of the 18 th century. Students will learn basic methods of harmonic analysis, the harmonic implications of figured bass and the principles of simple four-part harmony. Goals: a knowledge of voice leading principle, use of dissonance, cadences, harmonic progression and its description using roman numerals (Stufenlehre) and functional symbols (Funktionslehre); the ability to understand and to realise a figured bass using all diatonic three and four-part chords; an understanding of diatonic modulation (analysis); an understanding of cadential implications of a given melody.
Basis of the course work consists of both practical execises derived from works of the period and the learning of various methods of harmonic analysis. Harmonic progressions are presented in simplified abtract form, observed in the context of contrasting musical textures and styles and applied in simple exercises. Reference is made both to modern harmonic theory and the theory of the period.
Written: Four-part realisation of a simple figured bass and its analysis using roman numerals and functional symbols; harmonic analysis of works of the period (includind diatonic modulation); setting of figured bass to given cadential situations.
Will be discussed in the first lesson.
