With the example of a gender specific reflection of important fields of political, social, cultural change, the students acquire knowledge on these topics and on the relevance of gender specific research, skills in dealing with historical sources, and in looking for and working with literature of Austrian History as well as skills in presenting their acquired knowledge orally and written; they can formulate a relevant research question within the field of a smaller historical topic, look for necessary literature and printed sources and present their results orally in an adequate form. They are able to accept constructive critique and then to write a text in the mode of a scientific paper.

To ask, how historical change in fields as e.g. political participation, laws, work, education, the design of state and society in general, influenced existing gender relations and  - on the other hand - concepts of gender relations influenced the historical change in those fields, is essential for dealing with historical research. Gender is "a useful category of historical analysis". In the field of Austrian History there are plenty of sources and (meanwhile) essays and books dealing with this rich topics with which the historical genesis of our present situation can be analyzed.

The students are expected to be present regularly and to take an active part in the course; they have to do smaller tasks alone or in groups; oral presentation of their own topic, including a handout; moderation of discussion; paper (15 pp.).

basic literature will be announced in the course; research of further specific literature is part of the students´ tasks.

Due to substantial differences in the allocation of ECTS-Credits in various curricula (teacher training programs/specialized degree programs), the requirements for this course vary. Information will be provided by the instructor at the beginning of the course.
