Knowledge of fundamental principles in mechanics of solids and fluids in consistent representation. Application to elementary problems of statics and kinematics. Development of practice-oriented problem formulations (suitable for numerical implementation) and computational methods.

Point kinematics. Kinematics of rigid bodies. Modeling concepts in mechanics. Fundamentals of statics (force, force density, stresses, force systems and their reduction, equilibrium equations, free body diagram). Weight, center of gravity, static moments. Introduction into static analysis of beams, trusses, frames and fluids. Work and power of forces. Potential energy. Principle of virtual work.

Development of concepts and fundamental principles of mechanics on the blackboard, supplemented by lecture notes. Demonstration and training of solving elementary problems in statics and kinematics.

Midterm and final written examination
