- Conceptual implementation into a defined location.
- Main project: design of a spatial conglomerate that is embedded into a specific context and that carries all facilities and equipments necessary to perform as a new kind of institution or instrument of education.
Everybody is talking nowadays about the issue of "learning for a lifetime". Politics defines it as a new type of studying that ranges from primary school, secondary school, university and professional formation until to the so-called education of adults.
Where does it start, where does one learn how to study? We will concentrate on the early phases of learning, during the so-called primary school, whereas the mainstream types of teaching and studying in schools will be put into question, reinterpreted and reconceptualised. Information is nowadays everywhere available and that is fundamentally changing the way knowledge is mediated. Our goal is to oppose an alternative to existing schools that are apparently not able to cope with this phenomenon.
The question is not only how the necessary spaces will look like, furthermore how we will study, accumulate process and mediate knowledge in new types of spaces. What happens before and after studying and how does the experience of learning fade out?
The Seminar "Vertiefung der Raumgestaltung" forms a substantial complementation to the design project. Participation in the seminar is not compulsory but recommended.
The gallery of the IFA (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen) is planning to realize the exhibition "Klasse Schule - Orte des Lernens" in Oktober 2014 that will be on show in Stuttgart and Berlin. It will exhibit case studies of extraordinary samples of schools from all over the world. During the seminar all information and exhibition material will be researched and carried out in corporation with the Institut für Raumkonzeptionen und Grundlagen des Entwerfens (IRGE) and the Institut für öffentliche Bauten und Entwerfen (IÖB) of the University of Stuttgart. Workshops for the exchange between the universities are scheduled. Supplementary to the case studies the results of the design project shall be part of the exhibition as well.
The project work is structured into four phases: three preliminary projects (Design Studio 4 - Fundamentals) in the winter term and the main project (Design Studio 4 - Project - Bachelor Thesis I) in the summer term. The topic comprises all projects and the intermediate results of the preliminary projects form essential parts, even when adapted, of the main project.
In order to participate in the main project (Design Studio 4 - Project - Bachelor Thesis I) during the summer term the successful completion of the three preliminary projects (Design Studio 4 - Fundamentals) is compulsory.
Working in teams is not possible.
