Prerequisites: The learner can introduce himself/herself in simple sentences and has knowledge of Hiragana und Katagana syllabary.

Goal: At this level the learner can understand everyday expressions and simple sentences aimed at the satisfaction of simple needs of a concrete type; he/she can introduce himself/herself and others and ask questions about personal details - e.g. where they live, whom they know and what things they own - and can answer questions of this kind; he/she can communicate in a simple way if the other person is sympathetic and speaks slowly and carefully. Introduction to Kanji characters. Introduction to calligraphy on request

Topics:
a night out on the weekend; a trip to Okinawa; travelling; daily routine; in a restaurant; family; winter holidays; traditional theatre (Kabuki); Japanese culture

Linguistic Goals:
to respond to instructions; to ask for permission/ to permit something; to voice prohibitions; to describe activities and people; to count people; to report what others have told; to talk about likes/ dislikes; to report on past events; to compare two or more things; to voice intentions

Structural Goals:
„te“-form („-te kudasai“, „-nai de kudasai“, „-te mo ii desu“, „-te wa ikemasen“, „-te iru“ - to talk about actions happening at the time of speaking or to talk about results of changes; quantifiers - to count people; „-to omoimasu“, „-to omotte imashita“, „-to itte imashita - to quote something/ what someone has said; „-nai de kudasai“ - to ask somebody not to do something; verb + „no ga suki desu“ - to say what you like doing; „tsumori da“ – to express an intention; adjectives + „naru“ – to talk about changes in quality; noun + „no“ - to indicate relation/ possession; „-de ikimasu“ - to say which means of transport you take; „kakarimasu“ - to describe how long something lasts
