Boost expertise and sensitivity with regard to empirical work in theology. Developing research questions and testing qualitative empirical approaches and methods. Become acquainted  with the most important qualitative and empirical data flows. Combine empirical and theological approaches.

High-quality theology doesn't dismiss concrete experiences and specific contexts. In this seminar, we ask the question of how this can be methodically directed and theological reflection taken into account. The following topics will be covered:

Empirical research and theology.

Difference between qualitative and quantitative empirical research.

The design of an empirical project based on a research question. Introduction to the qualitative review of life stories (qualitative interviews, participant observation, etc.) and their interpretation (sequence analysis, coding methods etc.).

Inputs, short presentations, design of small projects, example tests of qualitative empirical approaches

Method: attendance, active participation in small projects, preparation of short presentations, written work.

Reader in OLAT-Kurs; Lamnek, Siegfried, Qualitative Forschung. Lehrbuch, Weinheim 22005. Further literature will be given during the seminar

For Diploma Programme in Catholic Theology: positive completion of compulsory module 1 (first part of studies).

The course also counts for the Masters  Program in Islamic Religious Education
