The course will provide a broad overview of state of the art international theoretical and empirical research on the intersection of inequalities in contemporary Western societies and in less industrialized countries. Cross-cutting dimensions of inequality under discussion will include, for example, stratification by cultural distinction, class and status, and lifestyles and politics. We will discuss various manifestations of social inequality and their association with axes of gender, ethnicity, religiosity, education, and age. We will also emphasize the way cultural, economic, and political differences, boundaries and meanings are stratified. Finally, we will discuss possible future relationships between different axes of social differentiation as these are shaped by changes in cultural hierarchies, by the degree of openness of societies and by social mobility.

The course goals will include providing a review of the field of research with an emphasis on current developments but also catering to the interests of students and their specific ongoing or planned research projects. Therefore, at the beginning of the course I will invite students' input to help shape the specific contents of our meetings.
