Students acquire in-depth knowledge of the concepts proposed by the most important theoreticians in Psychoanalysis and Cultural Studies

We will try to examine Freuds "Das Unbehagen in der Kultur" and follow its footprints up to Adornos and Horkheimers important Book "Dialectics of Enlightment", which had an enourmous impact on the discussion within Cultural Studies in the 20th century. Then we will go through contemporary works, that are relevant for the relation between Psychoanalysis and Culture, like those by R. Pfaller.

The course is conceived as a reading seminar. All students must read all proposed texts in order to take part in theoretical discussions on a higher level during the sessions.

Course with formative assessment, i.e., students are graded on the basis of written and/or oral tasks assigned regularly over the term. Each student must prepare a short presentation for one session and write a paper (15 pages) on issues discussed in the proposed books.
